A different approach to career success
Ladders let you climb higher. Bridges let you expand your potential. There’s a well-established status quo for how to progress in your career—climb the ladder. The higher you go, the better off you’ll be. For who doesn’t like the view from the top. The strength of your ladder is largely dependent on the level to which you can hone your relevant skills.
But I’d argue there’s a healthier way to find success in your career. Build stronger bridges. By that I mean that you should spend just as much strengthening the ties in your network as you spend honing your individual skills.
Skills build ladders, networks build bridges.
